Cricket formats and well-known competitions

Cricket's three main formats — T20, ODI and Test — each offer a different betting experience. T20 matches are the fastest, finishing in just a few hours; the result can swing at any moment. The run rate fluctuating with each over keeps markets active.

In ODI cricket, fifty overs allow strategy and patience to be reflected in the odds. From the batting powerplay to the middle overs, each phase creates a new context in the market. In Test cricket, the situation can turn around within five days, so long-term markets such as "series winner" are more common.

Among the competitions Bangladeshi cricket fans follow most closely, BPL stands out. IPL, the ICC T20 World Cup and Bangladesh Tigers international matches also generate wide interest. All these competition markets are available at 9 bet — even while matches are live.

Football and other sports betting

9 bet sports betting football and cricket together

Alongside cricket, 9 bet also offers football betting. The betting experience for each sport is quite different. In cricket, every wicket and every over creates new markets; in football, the number of goals and the timing are the key factors.

A "draw" result market in cricket exists only in Test matches — in T20 and ODI, one of the two teams wins. In football, a draw is a common result, so there are three outcomes: home win, draw and away win. This difference directly affects the odds.

Betting on other sports follows broadly the same process, but it is important to understand each sport's own scoring system and season cycle. Betting should always be approached as entertainment — only stake what you are comfortable losing.

Cricket's popular markets — how they work

Each market has its own characteristics. Below are seven common markets, each with a simple example — Team A and Team B are used as generic names.

Match Winner

Easiest market

Bet on which of the two teams will win. There is no draw in T20 or ODI. Example: if you think Team A will win a match between Team A and Team B, place your bet on Team A.

Toss Winner

Short-term market

Bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. The result is known within the first few minutes. Example: if Team B wins the toss in a match between Team A and Team B, the bet is successful.

Top Batsman

Performance market

Predict which batsman will score the most runs for a team. If Team A has multiple options, odds differ for each; well-known names expected to score more runs carry lower odds.

Total Runs — Over/Under

Runs-based market

Bet on whether the total runs will be above or below a set target (for example, 160 runs). Example: if Team A scores 165 and you chose "over", the bet wins.

Multi Bet

Multiple selections

Multiple selections from different markets are combined into a single bet. If all selections are correct, the total return is much higher, but if even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost. Full multi bet rules are in the FAQ.

Handicap and Margin

Margin-based market

A weaker team is given an artificial advantage to level the market. Example: if Team A is given a -15 run handicap, Team A must win by more than that margin for the bet to win.

Runs Before First Wicket

Bet on how many runs will be scored before the first wicket falls at the start of an innings. Quick wickets in the T20 powerplay are common, making this an active market. Example: if Team B's opening pair scores 30+ runs before the first wicket, the "over 30" bet wins.

A simple way to understand odds

Odds are written in three formats — decimal, fractional and American. All three are just different ways of expressing the same information. Use the two examples below to understand the difference.

Example 1 — the same odds in three formats

A ৳500 bet is placed on Team A to win. The odds can be written in three ways:

Format Value
Decimal3.00
Fractional2/1
American+200

If Team A wins, total return is ৳1,500 (৳1,000 profit + ৳500 stake). If they lose, ৳500 is gone.

Example 2 — odds for the favourite

Team B is the favourite, so the odds are lower. With the same ৳500 bet:

Format Value
Decimal1.50
Fractional1/2
American-200

If Team B wins, total return is ৳750 (৳250 profit). Negative American odds show how much you need to stake to win ৳100.

Live betting — odds change with every wicket and over

LIVE In-Play

In-play or live betting means placing bets while a match is in progress. In cricket this is particularly engaging because every wicket, every boundary and every maiden over instantly changes the odds.

Say Team A has scored 50 runs in the first five overs without losing a wicket — at that point, Team A's odds of winning will shorten because their chances have improved. Conversely, if Team B takes two wickets in the very first over, Team B's odds will start to fall quickly.

In-play markets are most changeable in T20 matches — a single six can shift the situation. In ODI the changes come more gradually, and in Test cricket the pitch condition and weather at the end of each day affect the odds. It is worth having a clear understanding of the terms and conditions when live betting at 9 bet — all information is on the terms and conditions page.

One thing to keep in mind during live betting: odds update very quickly, so take a moment to assess the situation before making a decision.

Practical tips for enjoying betting

Betting is a form of entertainment. The tips below can help keep the experience more organised and enjoyable.

1
Set a budget first

Keep a separate budget for each match. Only set aside an amount you are comfortable losing. It is better not to treat betting as a way to earn income.

2
Understand one or two markets well

Rather than jumping into all markets at once, it is more effective to understand two markets well — such as match winner and total runs. Decisions are easier when you are familiar with the format.

3
Get familiar with odds formats beforehand

Decimal, fractional and American — all three formats give the same information. Being able to do quick mental calculations makes it easier to decide during in-play betting.

4
Keep the number of selections low in a multi bet

The more selections in a multi bet, the lower the chance of all of them being correct. Sticking to two or three selections gives a relatively better chance of the bet winning.

5
Set your own limits

If you cannot accept a loss, betting becomes a source of stress rather than enjoyment. Follow the responsible gaming guidelines and set a weekly limit for yourself.

6
Keep expectations in check

Unexpected results can happen in any match — that is part of sport. If you treat betting as entertainment, both wins and losses feel natural.

Cricket betting common questions

Yes, the types of markets vary slightly by format. In T20 and ODI, the match winner market has no draw option — one of the two teams wins. In Test matches, a draw is a valid result, so there are three options. Test cricket also features more long-term markets such as "series winner" or "higher first innings score".

The basic structure is the same — markets like match winner, total runs and top batsman are available in both tournaments. The difference is in tournament size and number of matches. IPL has ten teams, so there are more group-stage markets; BPL has fewer teams, making the seasonal markets smaller. Live betting is available in both.

If a match is cancelled due to rain or any other reason, bets are generally voided and the stake is refunded. However, if a result is declared using the Duckworth-Lewis method after a certain number of overs have been played, that is treated as a valid result. See the terms and conditions for the exact rules.

In cricket, live odds can change after every ball. Odds update instantly after a wicket falls, after a boundary, or during a maiden over. Changes happen fastest in T20 matches. Before placing a live bet, check the current odds on screen.

The target is set by 9 bet's market specialists based on match conditions, pitch type and each team's recent performance. The over/under target differs for every match. Example: if the total runs target for a T20 match is set at 320, then 321 or more means "over" wins, and 319 or fewer means "under" wins.
